In
1995 Ryan Murphy was approached by a friend looking to start
a band.
A local label was preparing a compilation, and the friend was
guaranteed a spot. Ryan had a four-track and a guitar; the friend
was willing to sing.
The two piece was on the CD, but nothing followed.
Frustrated, Ryan began to do his own recordings (Havergal),
simple songs consisting of guitars and drum machines, and his
vocals.
Initially the songs were catchy but thin. With time though,
the songs became more complex and with numerous guitar tracks
riding over distorted beats.
The first seven inch release came a couple years after the first
Havergal recordings.
The songs still possess the simple feel of the solo four-track
recording but now have a definitive signature.
Layers of guitars over looped beats with multiple vocal tracks,
a simple palette, create a wonderful sound. |
